About the RT-PCR Test
The Covid-19 PCR test, which stands for polymerase chain reaction, consists of a nasal swab that’s sent to a lab to detect any signs of SARS-CoV-2. Because the sample needs to be analyzed in a lab, this type of Covid test can take up to a day or longer to receive results.
RT-PCR tests are generally accurate and easily accessible. However, accuracy drops if you’re tested too soon, before the viral load can be detected. If you suspect you’ve been in contact with someone ill with Covid-19 and immediately get a negative result, consider waiting a few days to get tested again, especially if you notice any symptoms. Three to five days after exposure is the best window for accurate results.
About the Covid Rapid Test
Rapid antigen tests are the fastest Covid-19 test, delivering results in about 15-30 minutes. Similar to the RT-PCR test, they use a nasal swab to detect the virus. The Covid rapid test can also work with a sample from the mouth. While this type of test is the cheapest and most convenient, it’s also slightly less accurate than its counterpart. Because of the high demand and low supply of the rapid Covid test, we can only offer a limited amount per day.
What Happens if You Test Positive?
If you test positive for Covid-19, the CDC now recommends isolating at home for at least five days, even if you don’t have symptoms. After the five days are up, if you’re feeling healthy, give us a call for a follow-up test. When you leave the house, make sure to wear a mask, social distance, and sanitize your hands frequently.
When Should You Seek Medical Attention?
If you’re isolating at home and suffering from symptoms, it’s vital to know when to get help. Seek medical treatment if you experience:
- Difficulty breathing
- Sharp chest pain
- Extreme brain fog
- A high fever
- A weak pulse
- A blue tint to your skin
- EKG
